Animal Welfare

Great care and attention is paid to animal welfare. The soft floor concept has been hugely successful, winning accolades from all involved in the sale process.

Yards are designed to minimise bruising and to make handling of all stock as stress free and safe as possible. All equipment represents the highest quality design and construction.

Watering systems are robust and trouble-free ensuring stock have access to water at all times.

Occupational Health and Safety

OH & S Compliance is a constant focus with the Victorian Livestock Exchange. Installation of Supaway® at Pakenham and Leongatha facilities represents best practice and minimises the chance of injury.

In fact the Board believes this initiative has reduced the risk of staff injury by approximately 75 percent.

Supaway® is a system of walkways and access points that allows efficient movement of cattle while protecting the handlers.

National Livestock Identification System

The Victorian Livestock Exchange has been at the forefront of introducing National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) protocols.

The VLE uses both fixed and hand-held scanning and has developed considerable expertise in the technology.

The Victorian Livestock Exchange contracts its services to other non-company owned sale yards and provides extensive consultancy services to the livestock exchange industry.

Environmental Management

The VLE works with several water boards and other environmental agencies and is always fully compliant with all requirements.

Holding ponds and treatment facilities are well maintained and regularly upgraded.

Waste bark chips from the soft floors are recycled in a manner that provides traceability in the event of any disease outbreak.

Transport Infrastructure

Transport facilities are a critical element of livestock exchanges, with stock being trucked both to and from the yards.

VLE has worked closely with transport operators to provide easy access, safe and efficient ramps and wash down bays.

Provision is made for all types of transport form the farm ute and trailer through to B-doubles.
